The City Never Sleeps – New York

Description

The City Never Sleeps

The city is always alive with that balanced energy, and The City Never Sleeps just about grabs you and drags you into the midst of it all. We’re talking a full-on metropolis at rush hour when the sun is setting – the whole place is just buzzing. The artist’s managed to create a stunning stretch of light that slices through the skyscrapers and just draws your eye right down the middle of this wet, shining street that’s pulsating with people in motion. You get this amazing blend of impressionist feeling and expressionism in the way the whole thing is put together ,and then end up with a real celebration of both the grandeur and the sheer number of people that make up a modern city.

The view of the skyline is pretty breathtaking – it’s been painted in these flat planes of brown, grey and this deep blue, and it just looks like a giant wall of different buildings – every single one with its own story to tell. And yet at the same time you can feel the energy of the night slowly creeping up on you as the whole sky starts to turn this gorgeous shade of gold and the stars start to come out… it’s one of those moments when you can just feel the collective heartbeat of the city – you know, that magical time of day when the quietness of dusk is slowly overwhelmed by the noise and energy of the night.

But down on the ground, things are just as alive. There’s these silhouettes of people walking around, crossing the lights and weaving in and out of all these giant reflections in the wet pavement – and the street lamps are just these tiny little beacons of light cutting through the night, a reminder that even in all the chaos and noise there’s still this thread of human connection running through the whole place. Of course these people are all just anonymous figures – but somehow that just makes their collective energy feel even more powerful. I mean, it’s the same feeling you get when you’re in a great city and you know that there are all these different people from all different backgrounds, all coming together and making the place tick.

What I think the artist’ s managed to do with The City Never Sleeps is get a real balance between the architecture of the place – all the towering buildings and the space between them – and the feeling of the place itself. And they end up with this amazing painting that just captures the whole of that experience – the dynamism, the collective spirit, and the whole cultural richness of what it means to live in a city like this. With its bright colors and that incredible use of light, it really is a tribute to the whole cosmopolitan spirit of the modern city – it’s a pretty amazing piece of art.
